USING
TECHNOLOGY TO PROBLEM SOLVE
Competition Date: Friday, March 11, 2005
Location: Ala Moana Hotel
Event: The Asia-Pacific Cyber Games
Take a real-life school, business, social, civic or economic issue identified by
an actual client and propose, design and implement a technological solution.
This category is open to students in grades 7 through 12. If your solution to
the school, business, social, civic or economic issue is software-based,
it may include XML data, a spreadsheet, or a database and application code
written in a language such as, but not limited to, HTML with JavaScript and/or
VBScript, Perl, PHP, Flash, Visual Basic, VB.net, Java, C#, C++, or Assembly.
Potential projects may also come in the form of computer network or
engineering support for the actual client.
In order for a project to qualify, participants must work in collaboration with
an actual client. Payment by the client for project completion is not a
requirement and will not factor into the judging.
HiTech Quest will award three prizes: first place ($1000 scholarship), second
place ($500 scholarship), and third place ($250 scholarship).
How to Participate:

In order to participate in the 2005 HiTech Quest Scholarship Competition,
register you project online using the
HiTech Quest website by FRIDAY, February 4, 2005. Registration
requires a project title, a brief project description (please use complete
sentences), names of the participating students, school name, and name &
email address of the coach (teacher/mentor). There is no limit to the amount of
students that can work on each project.

A registration fee of $20 is due PER PROJECT. All participants upon payment
will receive a HiTech Quest Tee Shirt and various prizes on the competition
day. The team's registration forms and $20 fee (checks payable to "HiTech
Quest") must be postmarked by FRIDAY, February 4, 2005 to the

Individuals or teams must submit by FRIDAY, February 25, 2005 a
one to two-page typed, single-spaced document that clearly explains the
following:

A problem statement (outlines the problem that the individual or team is trying
to solve)

A vision statement (describes the fundamental goals of the project)
-
User profiles (identifies who will use or benefit from the technological
solution)

Design goals (how you plan on accomplishing the goals of the project)
-
A brief reflection regarding your learning and project.

A student representative for the group must be able to attend and present your
project for the Judges at the HiTech Quest showcase event on FRIDAY, March
11, 2005 at the Ala Moana Hotel. Each project’s creators will have
15 minutes to present their web site on a presentation stage in front of a
seated panel of judges representing Hawaii's technology industry. Presentation
equipment (i.e., a digital video projector or plasma display) will be provided.
Rules:

Student work on the project must be done during the 2004-05 school year.

Students may enter one project per category.

HiTech Quest reserves the right to disqualify any project deemed by its Board
of Directors to be inappropriate.
